Thing a Day- Feb 1, 2011

I've joined the Thing a Day project over at Polymer Clay Central, and this is my first day's work.  It's a pair of post earrings made with the crushed velvet, mica shift technique.  These are a kind of bronze color.  I mixed up the clay awhile ago and can't remember exactly what it is.  Sigh.

I hate it when posts pop off the handmade earrings I buy, so I insist on embedding mine in clay so they will not come off.

  1. Your earrings are gorgeous! I finish mine off the same way as I just don't like using glue at all. I find using clay to clay is far better.

  2. Thanks, I just love this mica shift technique. The colors are so deep and three-dimensional.

  3. I find that when I use clay to cover the earring post, it gets too thick, and then the earring back pinches on my ear. Does anyone make "long" post earring backs?

  4. Love the color and texture from the mica shift. I started doing covering my post at times also.

Gillian, try a thin, thin slice.

  6. Gillian, Rings & Things makes a very nice long post, #31-006. They are titanium which is supposed to be very good for sensitive skin. I buy the 6mm flat pad, but I think they have long posts in other pad sizes. Also, for the piece covering the post, I roll the clay to a #5 thickness. Even using a pair of pliers, I was unable to pull off a post attached in this way.
